If you are considering a career in warehousing, you might want to reconsider. Technology is having a huge impact on the job market in manufacturing facilities and warehouses because automated machinery is reducing the need for workers. This means the job market in this industry is going to continue to become more competitive and manual labor jobs are going to be scarce. There have already been massive warehouse layoffs, which has partially contributed to the poor state of the economy. Don’t go into the warehouse industry unless you are a mechanic or know how to design new machines to improve processes.
Technological advances in warehouse machinery actually are pretty cool. They are saving companies millions of dollars each year, and even though they are bad for workers, there are definitely some sound benefits. Companies no longer have to pay workers because machines work for free (unless you consider the power bill). Machines also won’t complain and they will do exactly what you tell them (if you’re a good programmer).
People have a lot of limitations. They are not able to work 12 hours or more each day and then do the same quality of work each subsequent day. They also demand wages and benefits. Plus, if someone gets injured or dies, the company is going to have to make several payouts without the work. If a machine dies, it can be repaired or replaced for a one-time fee. Plus, companies don’t have to worry about making machines happy because they do not have feelings.
In general, machines are much better for companies and they do better work than humans anyway. You should stay away from jobs in this industry because the technology is only going to get better, which will decrease the amount of jobs further. Choose a career in a safer industry, like health care, or technology itself. Technology isn’t going anywhere.
