You’ve probably heard people go on and on about how technology has changed life for the better in one way or another. Technology has made communication easier and faster and improved the lives of many in small ways. But something that is becoming more common these days is for people to complain about technology. This is because technology is getting so advanced that a lot of jobs are being replaced by robots and machines. Some even blame the poor state of the economy on the advancements of technology. More and more employers are upgrading the systems they use in their workplaces to make processes more streamlined and efficient, and this means fewer employees are needed in general.
Warehouses and manufacturing employees seem to be effected the most because of technology. This is because advancements in technology have led to the mass production of goods on an automated level, which greatly reduces the amount of workers needed. What used to take an entire crew of 10 to 20 to complete in one day now takes one employee a few hours. There is almost nothing that cannot be automated anymore.
The warehouse and manufacturing environment is not the only place that is seeing layoffs due to technology. Retail stores have less need for employees in their shipping departments because machines can do the work. Technology doesn’t only affect the manual labor positions, either. With fewer employees, there is no longer a need for as much administration.
On the bright side, technology does create jobs, too, but they usually require more skills and education. This is possibly one reason why there has been an urge for many adults to return to school in order to be competitive in the job market. One thing is certain: you need to be careful when making a career choice nowadays because of technology.
